Scuba Diving Cebu in the Philippines

Posted by: sddiver96

sddiver96

Scuba diving in the Philippines would not be complete without a visit to the coral reefs of Cebu. Up until recently the area was a marine reserve belonging to the administration of two of the largest islands nearby. Many diving clubs lay claim to this region being the best diving experience in the Philippines. The main best spots in the Cebu area are Nalusuan Island, Hilutungan Island, Talima and Tambuli.

If you dive down on the south eastern quarter of Cebu you can watch some whale sharks, in particular in the Oslob area. It will take around four and a half hours travel by car from Maribago but it will be well worth it as in recent years divers have reported seeing schools of whale sharks in some cases 24-strong.

The best time to look for the whale sharks is when the waters are slightly cooler in September and October time. But be warned as there are a number of restrictions that divers should adhere to when diving to see the whale sharks. You must not go within five metres of the sharks and you cannot feed them under any circumstances. Also, make sure you do not use a flash when taking pictures underwater. Divers must also refrain from applying any body lotions before going to see the sharks.

The marine sanctuary around Talima Islands is perfect for seeing unspoilt reefs and less in the way of crowds. Many of the tiny, colourful tropical fish can actually come up to you so close you can touch them with your hands. Malapascua scuba diving is another region where diving is an experience of a lifetime. Here scuba teams will find a huge mountain range cascading into warm seas and white beaches, where coral reefs offer the diver a chance to snorkel rather than dive as the reefs are only four of five foot deep in many places. One of the advantages of the snorkeling experience here is that you can fly on to other areas in Cebu by light aircraft without having to worry about pressure and sudden pressure change in the body after a deep dive.

The weather in Cebu is always very warm to hot, even at night. There is no real cool or hot season. All year round the temperature reaches around 30C (86F) by day and drops to around 26C (79F) at night.
