CCR Pioneers ANDI, IANTD, and TDI to Release Historical Data about rebreathers at Rebreather Forum 3 (RF3)

For the first time in the history of the scuba diving industry, ANDI, IANTD, and TDI came to an agreement to work together in releasing the total number of divers certified on rebreathers at RF3. Never before has the industry known just how big the CCR (Closed Circuit Rebreather) market is and this data will do just that.

“There is a lot of speculation out there about just how many people learn to dive on CCR’s. With over 20 years of data collectively to provide the industry, I am really glad to participate with Ed Betts, Tom Mount, and Joe Dituri in releasing our certification numbers,” stated Brian Carney, President of TDI.

“The rebreather industry is fickle and I laud the other big rebreather certification agencies for getting together and setting the record straight. I have never been more excited to be part of this growing culture. Our cooperation is a win for the diving public,” stated Joseph Dituri, Vice President of IANTD.

“Our corroboration will hopefully provide some clarity and result in a stronger, safer industry for all of us,” said Ed Betts, President of ANDI. “Rebreather Forum 3 should be about improving understanding and safety, and safety should not be a competitive issue.”

Due to the fact that the three companies have slightly different ways of classifying rebreather certifications, the numbers will be broken out as Basic, Intermediate, and Advanced certifications by year. Basic qualifications will include any entry level program to CCR’s and SCR’s (Semi-Closed Rebreather).

Intermediate qualifications will include any training that includes minimal decompression, and finally Advanced qualifications will include Trimix, and exploratory qualifications. The companies will also be showing the difference between SCR and CCR certifications.

This information will be released after the event for anyone who will not be able to attend.

CGY38UBVAGNK

Utila Dive Festival is an exciting week-long event highlighting the island of Utila - CGY38UBVAGNK – both above and below the water. Underwater, we will have daily themed scuba dives, photo contests and a treasure hunt. At the surface the parties, Taste of Utila and prize giveaways will draw a crowd with opening and closing beach parties.

The event, scheduled for August 18-25, is designed not only to attract a wide range of visitors but also to benefit the entire community of Utila. The Utila Dive Festival was created to highlight the tiny diving Mecca of Utila, one of The Bay Islands located in the Western Caribbean just South of Belize. Utila Dive Festival 2012, is a week of diving, dancing, dining and discovering on a tropical island whose heart beats scuba day in and day out.

The Utila Dive Festival is focused on building an atmosphere that will both educate and foster the enjoyment of sharing underwater experiences and also highlight what Utila has to offer as a vacation destination. Our best assets are being part of the largest reef in the Western Hemisphere that surrounds the islands, the over 99% of Caribbean sea life that makes its home in our waters and the elusive Whale Shark, the world’s largest fish that has been seen here all year round.

Traditionally a beginners diving paradise, Utila has progressed over the years offering specialty training courses, tech diving, reef ecology and professional training packages. In recent years, many dive resorts and the Utila Aggressor have influenced Utila’s overall breadth, offering fun diving experiences mixed with casual Caribbean getaways. The myriad of Mom and Pop-shops, restaurants, crazy little seaside bars, topside activities and nature excursions round up the island as a fun happening place to spend a dive or water adventure vacation.

There will be specialized diving activities held throughout the week including a photography competition, advanced buoyancy workshops, reef ecology and whale shark talks, tec and sidemount try dives including closed circuit rebreathers. There will also be social events in the evenings, Caribbean island style with a 'taste of Utila' food fair. So far our sponsors have committed over $7000 in retail value of prizes and include;

 -12 Sealife Cameras
Aqua Lung regulator, -BCD and mask/snorkel and fins,
 -Scubapro MK25/S600 regulator
6, -GoPro HD Hero II sports cameras with housing
, -Intova cameras and light
2 DiveRite sidemount rigs, reels, SMB's and wet notes

. There are also courses and vacation stays at various local dive resorts and centers worth an additional $3000 to be won!

Many of the dive operators have week specials to coincide with the Utila Dive Festival and more information can be found here http://utiladivefestival.com/special-offers/.

Whether people wish to travel as a single diver or come with friends and family, this will be the perfect week of diving with social events below and above the water to partake in.

Make your plans now to experience the first annual UTILA DIVE FESTIVAL 2012, a scuba divers nirvana!

So sweet. A couple of scuba divers decide to go for a dive. The boyfriend plans his proposal for 6 months, then pops the question below the surface off the Mexico coast. By the excess bubbles, the bride to be nods and the ring, served in a sea shell, is placed on her finger to make it official. Wonder if they will be renewing there vows at the same location in the future? Congrats you two!!!!

Wreck of the RMS Rhone - (Salt Island)

The most famous dive site in the BVIs is located off Salt Island near Black Rock. This is considered to be one of the best wreck dives in the Caribbean and was the Film site for the movie, "The Deep," starring Jacqueline Bisset. At least two dives are needed to cover both the bow and stern sections of the wreck. You may want to dive it at night to see the cup corals and sponges turn the main compartment into an array of orange and yellow.

Blonde Rock - (Dead Chest and Salt Island)

Blonde Rock is located between Dead Chest and Salt Islands and consists of Twin pinnacles that attract an abundance of marine life including turtles, schools of jack, cobia, barracuda and occasionally sharks. Structures are full of undercuts, ledges and amazing canyons.

Painted Walls - (Dead Chest)

Located near Dead Chest. Series of bright-colored gullies and canyons in 30 to 60 feet of water. Turtles and nurse sharks can be seen here also.

Angelfish Reef - (Norman Island)

Located on the lee side of Norman Island. Great for both beginners and advanced divers. Slopes from 20 to 80 feet. Plentiful fish life.

The Indians - (Norman Island)

Located near Norman Island. Lee shore has calm, clear water for snorkelers. The Indians is at depths to 90 feet for divers with black coral at depth.

Playground - (Green Cay)

Located on the South Side of Green Cay. This site consists of a sheltered rock bottom encrusted with expansive hard and soft coral growth. Home to a wide variety of reef species.

Coral Garden (Great Dog)

Located on the south side of Great Dog, Coral Garden consists of a large reef system with depths to 50 feet. A nearby airplane wreck can be explored on the same dive for beginner and intermediate divers.

Wreck of Inganess Bay - (Cooper Island)

Located south of Cooper Island. At this site there are island cargo vessels placed on a sandy plane with depths to 95 feet. Stingrays are common.

Visibles - (Cockroach Island)

Located off the Southwestern tip of Cockroach Island the Visibles is a submerged pinnacle rising within 4 feet of surface. This site attracts many large schools of fish.

Chikuzen

Over 7 miles off of Tortola. Storm-damaged 246 foot refrigerator ship is located in deep water on the Atlantic side. Look for big pelagics. Cuan Law is the only dive boat that regularly visits this site as it is too far out for local shore base operators to get to.

Scuba Diving the Sha’ab Abu Nuhas Reef in the Red Sea

Sha’ab Abu Nuhas is a coral reef northwest of Shadwan Island in the northern Red Sea. It is a navigation hazard because it projects into the shipping channel, as evidenced by the (at least) 7 shipwrecks on it including the SS Carnatic, Kimon M, Chrisola K and Ghiannis D. It is popular with scuba divers. Its name is Arabic for "reef of father of copper", after the cargo of one of the wrecks.

All wrecks lie on the northern side of the reef exposed to Prevailing winds and waves, and extending from west to east. The oldest one is the wreck of the Carnatic that goes back to 1898, the youngest of the still visible wrecks is Ghiannis D., shipwrecked in 1983.

The Olden transporting lentils, sank in 1887 and has vanihead, probably resting in deep waters still to be found. On the southern side of the reef, in front of a shallow lagoon that has no access, there is the only fixed mooring offering sufficient protection for boats.

Future to the north, between Abu Nuhas and Shawan about 3 miles away, there are three small reefs called Yellowfish Reefs due to the presence of numerous yellow fish: butterflyfish and goatfish and that come op from a sandy seaded at a depth of 15 meters. The exploration of the wrecks has to be done with a calm sea and preferably zodiac.

We hope you have a chance to dive the reef and we look forward to hearing your dive stories.
