Kungkungan Bay Resort is nestled on the site of an old coconut plantation on the Sulawesi coast of Lembeh strait. Located on the sunrise side of the peninsula, the view from the guest accommodations encompasses rugged Lembeh Island and the smaller Serena Island. North Sulawesi enjoys a mild tropical climate with gentle breezes year-round. Daytime temperatures are generally in the mid-eighties cooling into the seventies at night.
The Resort was specifically designed to achieve a pleasing aesthetic effect with minimum impact on the environment. By using local materials and traditional architecture and adding western style bathrooms and amenities the resort reflects the local Minahasan culture, while providing international standards of comfort, convenience, safety, and privacy.
Facilities at KBR include a private jetty with camera rinse tanks and hot showers, camera charging room, air conditioned bar, swimming pool with swim-up bar, lounge, internet access and lending library. There are also WIFI hot spots available throughout the resort. Restaurant service is available 24-hours of every day.
Kungkungan Bay Resort is proud to offer North Sulawesi's only truly exclusive dive site. Kungkungan Bay (our House Reef) can only be dived by our in-house guests. No fishing has been allowed in Kungkungan Bay since the resort opened, way back in 1994, making this without doubt the fishiest dive site anywhere in the Strait – and it's your alone to enjoy, when you stay at KBR.
The Food at Kungkungan Bay Resort is plentiful and of the highest quality. Our Menu features both Indonesian and Western Cuisine. The Restaurant Facility also serves as a social center and entertainment area. Here our guests often share their images from Lembeh and other dive destinations and when we have our special photo pros in residence they share their photographic tips and secrets with the guests.
Kungkungan Bay Resort (or just KBR to its many fans) is located in the very heart of the Lembeh Strait, giving access to fifty dive sites, all within fifteen minutes of our private jetty. An intimate and exclusive resort, Kungkungan is staffed by a friendly, professional team who will look after your every need from the moment you arrive to the moment you depart.
All rooms are sea facing, with three categories of spacious accommodation to choose from. Our unique over-the-water restaurant inspires visitors with its spectacular views of our exclusive house reef, the Lembeh Strait and the nearby tropical islands. Come join us at KBR for one of the most fantastic experiences of your life.
Learning to Dive at KungKungan Dive Resort -
With good visibility, minimal currents and clear water (and superb instructors!) KBR and the Lembeh Straits is an excellent place to learn to dive or enhance your scuba skills. Why not add to the fun of your holiday with a PADI course? Or, if you have never dived before, come and spend a fun couple of hours Discovering Scuba Diving – an introduction to diving which will show you why we all get so excited about it. It’s ideal for the non-diving partner.
The dive staff at the resort are pretty keen on their underwater photography (to put it mildly!). Some of us have invested our children’s inheritance in camera gear. Others have just sold their souls to Nikon and Subal. Please feel free to fire any questions at us. We are always delighted to talk about lenses, housings, strobes, cameras and software.
We can arrange to get items of Sea and Sea equipment for you at VERY competitive prices. We can also arrange for Inon equipment to be sent to you directly by the manufacturer to your home before you visit KBR. (you must be booked to visit KBR to use this facility). We can also get you Canon and Nikon equipment.
We have a Sea and Sea digital camera for rental (FX-1G) with a strobe. And we can rent strobes (Inons) to you if you want to try one out – or if you are having problems with your own. We can burn DVD and CDs for you at short notice and help with downloading. In fact, anything photographic is worth asking us about. Contact Kaj at
. Just don’t tell his kids you are talking underwater photography with him.
We have a full range of Aqualung dive equipment for rent. We also have a wide-range of Scubapro full-length wetsuits in various sizes in 3mm and 5mm thickness (we usually recommend 3mm). Do give us advance warning of rental needs if at all possible. We really hate to disappoint – and a little advance warning helps us plan.
During your stay we are always happy to do all we can to fix leaks, change hoses, sort out minor dive equipment problems, advise on mortgages, tax relief, relationships – in fact all the sorts of worries and concerns presented to the dive staff by our guests. We offer grief counselling for those who have flooded their camera. And a cool drink to those who are sweating about flooding their cameras. Shoulders to cry on are our specialty.
